Artist statement ｜
Toki no Katachi | The Shape of Time
Time is often thought of as intangible—something fleeting, slipping past us, or dissolving into memory. Yet, it also accumulates, leaving behind traces that form the structure of our existence. Toki no Katachi (時の形), or The Shape of Time, explores how time manifests through repetition, routine, and imperceptible change.
Aislinn Janek’s work captures this through a restrained palette of whites and black, layered into textured surfaces that speak to the quiet weight of time. The built-up acrylic paint mimics sedimentation, a slow collection of moments pressed into form. Sewn through the canvas, thread becomes both a mark and a structure—delicate yet persistent, an act of stitching time into place.
Thread, though thin and pliant, carries a quiet resilience. A single strand may seem fragile, but when layered, knotted, or woven, it becomes strong—like memory, like habit, like time itself. In Japanese aesthetics, there is reverence for the unseen forces that shape us, for the spaces between. The stitches in Janek’s work act as both a tether and a fracture, a record of time’s passage and an acknowledgment of its impermanence.
Through this interplay of material and absence, Toki no Katachi asks: How does time shape us? And in turn, how do we shape time?

時の形 | The Shape of Time
時間は、つかの間のもの、私たちのそばをすり抜けていくもの、記憶の中に溶けていくものなど、無形のものだとよく考えられています。しかし、時間は蓄積され、私たちの存在の構造を形成する痕跡を残します。「時の形 (The Shape of Time) 」は、繰り返し、日常、そして目に見えない変化を通して時間がどのように現れるかを探ります。
アイスリン・ヤネックの作品は、白と黒の控えめなパレットを通してこれを捉え、時間の静かな重みを語る質感のある表面に重ねています。積み重なったアクリル絵の具は、ゆっくりと形に押し固められた瞬間の集まりである沈殿を模倣しています。キャンバスに縫い付けられた糸は、マークと構造の両方になります。繊細でありながら持続的で、時間を縫い合わせる行為です。
糸は細くしなやかですが、静かな弾力性を持っています。1本の糸は壊れやすいように見えますが、重ねたり、結んだり、編んだりすると、記憶のように、習慣のように、時間そのもののように強くなります。日本の美学には、私たちを形作る目に見えない力、その間の空間に対する敬意があります。ヤネックの作品のステッチは、つなぎ目と亀裂の両方として機能し、時間の経過の記録であり、その無常性を認めています。
この素材と不在の相互作用を通じて、「時の形」は次のように問いかけます。時間はどのように私たちを形作るのか？そして、逆に、私たちはどのように時間を形作るのか？
Bio｜
Janek is a New York City-based artist. Since 2014, she has lived and traveled throughout Europe, notably in Albania, Kosovo, Greece, and Czechia. Intercultural experience shapes her as a person and continues to influence her work.
She is interested in human universalities, intercultural relationships, and how language informs one’s sense of self. She is intrigued by the fragmentation of information caused by language barriers and how memories are created, stored, and altered over time.
In her work, Janek does not seek to provide answers but rather celebrates the desire to push the boundary from known to unknown.
This is Janek’s first time visited Japan and she is excited to visit Nishiaizu specifically to be in a different place and experience local people and the solace of nature. This body of work will be shown again at Akira Art Room in Ashiya, Hyogo, Japan on March 5th, 2025. She will return to Tokyo, Japan for a solo exhibition at Yu Harada Gallery in the Spring of 2026. ヤネックはニューヨークを拠点とするアーティスト。2014年以来、彼女はヨーロッパ各地、特にアルバニア、コソボ、ギリシャ、チェコに住み、旅をしてきました。異文化体験は彼女の人格を形成し、彼女の作品に影響を与え続けています。
彼女は人間の普遍性、異文化関係、そして言語が自己意識にどのように影響するかに興味を持っています。言語の壁によって引き起こされる情報の断片化と、記憶がどのように作成され、保存され、時間の経過とともに変化するか。
作品を通して、ヤネックは答えを提供することを求めているのではなく、既知から未知への境界を押し広げたいという欲求を称賛しています。
ヤネックが日本を訪れるのは今回が初めてで、彼女は西会津を訪れて、異なる場所に行き、地元の人々との交流や自然による安らぎを体験できることを楽しみにしています。この作品群は、2025年3月5日に兵庫県芦屋市の「Akira Art Room」で再び展示されます。さらに2026年春には東京のアートギャラリー「Yu Harada」で個展を開催します。彼女はInstagramで活動の最新情報を発信しています。
